What Is Fumigation, Exactly?

Fumigation is the treatment of an entire enclosed structure with a gas, at a calculated dose, for a calculated time. For houses, the structure is sealed under tarps (the "tent"), a licensed fumigator introduces sulfuryl fluoride, and the gas penetrates every void, wall and piece of furniture until the target pests, including their eggs, are eliminated.

Why Gas Succeeds Where Sprays Stop

Liquids go where a technician can spray, drill or foam. Colonies sealed inside enclosed framing, under floors or inside furniture joints are physically out of reach. Gas has no such limit: if air can eventually reach a space, fumigant reaches it at a lethal concentration. That is why fumigation is the reference treatment for widespread drywood termite and bed bug infestations.

Dose Is a Calculation, Not a Guess

Fumigators compute the structure's cubic volume, then factor temperature, exposure time and target pest into the dosage. A warning agent (chloropicrin) is added so any leak is immediately noticeable, the structure is posted and secured, and in many cases secondary locks and checks are required by Florida rules.

Aeration and Clearance

After the exposure period the tent comes off and fans ventilate the structure. Before anyone re-enters, the fumigator tests air throughout the home with sensitive instruments and posts clearance only when readings meet the strict legal threshold. The gas leaves no residue on surfaces, food-contact items or fabrics, which is why no washing is required after clearance.

What Fumigation Does Not Do

It leaves no protective residue, so it cannot prevent a future infestation, and it does not treat colonies living in the soil (subterranean termites need soil treatment). Honest fumigators say both things up front; TFS pairs fumigation with a 1-year retreatment guarantee and annual inspection renewals. The step-by-step for homeowners is on our tent fumigation service page.
